Gynecomastia Q&A

What is gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is enlarged breast tissue in men. It’s a common condition that may occur at any age, including infancy, adolescence, and adulthood.

The overdeveloped tissue can affect one or both breasts. The condition is benign and may resolve on its own over time. However, if you feel uncomfortable about your enlarged male breast tissue, the team at Women's Health Institute may have a solution for you.

What causes gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia may develop due to several reasons. However, a hormonal imbalance is the most common cause. Normally, men only produce small amounts of estrogen — the female hormone that controls breast tissue growth.

Men with gynecomastia may produce too much estrogen or not enough testosterone, resulting in breast enlargement. This is especially common during puberty.

Men may also notice enlarging breast tissue when they gain weight. Certain medications and health conditions may also cause an abnormal increase in breast size.

What cosmetic treatments can improve my gynecomastia?

The Women's Health Institute team uses BodyTite™ and liposuction to restore a more masculine chest and abdomen.

BodyTite

BodyTite is a minimally invasive radiofrequency assisted liposuction (RAFL) from InMode™. The revolutionary tool uses radiofrequency energy to liquify the unwanted breast tissue. At the same time, the energy tightens the skin and connective tissue to improve the overall look of the chest.

Once liquified, the BodyTite applicator removes the unwanted fat and gives you a more masculine breast tissue.

Liposuction

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that uses a cannula to remove unwanted fat from various parts of the body, including fatty tissue in the breast. The cosmetic experts at Women's Health Institute use power-assisted liposuction (PAL®) Liposuction System by MicroAire®.

This innovative liposuction tool gives the team the ability to remove unwanted fat from small areas of the body.

The team at Women's Health Institute may also use BodyTite or liposuction to remove unwanted fat from the abdomen to improve overall shape and contours.

Many male patients are grateful for the team’s skilled work and ability to restore their masculine shape.

Am I a candidate for cosmetic treatment for gynecomastia?

Schedule a consultation at the Women's Health Institute to see if the surgical experts can help you. Not everyone with enlarged male breasts needs cosmetic surgery. In some cases, the excess breast tissue resolves on its own after addressing the underlying cause.

If conservative care fails to improve the excess breast tissue, then the team may consider you a candidate for cosmetic treatment.
